    Oct 21, 2015· Date: 1948 Description: This negative shows a portion of the Steep Rock Iron Mine near Atikokan, Ontario. The Steep Rock Lake was drained, the west arm of the lake was sealed off, and the Seine River was rerouted to make way for the mine. Today, the site is the centre of some controversy as remnants of the mine, including toxic water pits and waste piles remain scattered throughout the site.
